Christening the Ocean’s Edge II

The plan when we sold the original Ocean’s Edge back in 2016 and bought the Genesis I was always that we would change the name of the new boat to the Ocean’s Edge II. Well, five years quickly flew by and we still hadn’t gotten around to it. In the winter of 2020 and the spring of 2021, we had her up in the shipyard for some maintenance and upgrades, along with a beautiful new paint job (meticulously hand-painted by Shane and I using a 3” wide sponge brush might I add!). Well, what better time to give her a new name and christen her properly?

Painting the boat, literally inch by inch

The tradition of christening a boat by smashing a bottle of champagne on her bow goes back a long way. It is a tradition that Shane felt was important to honour, and so, after we had registered the new name with Transport Canada and the boat was finished in the shipyard, we brought her back to our home port in Ladner to christen her the Ocean’s Edge II.

Well, no one told me just how STRONG a champagne bottle’s glass is! In hindsight, we should have scored the outside of the bottle to weaken it a bit, but, lesson learned. In doing some reading up on christening a ship, I have since learned that if the bottle does not break on the first blow, the superstition is that both the vessel and her crew will have bad luck. All I can do is hope that this superstition is wrong! After about five or six attempts, the bottle did indeed break, and we christened our new boat, the Ocean’s Edge II.

Success! The boat is christened the Ocean’s Edge II

The boat had a successful fishing season in 2021 and we are looking forward to a busy season in 2022!
